15 Types of White Hydrangeas for Your Garden (3)

Hydrangeas are one of the most beloved flowering shrubs in the garden, and there are many types to choose from. The genus Hydrangeaceae includes dozens of species, with six grown most often in the United States. They are commonly referred to by type as climbing, smooth, big leaf, panicle, oakleaf and mountain hydrangea.

Hydrangeas come in all sizes, from dwarf to quite large. They are deciduous and fully hardy or frost hardy, depending on USDA growing zone. Most types thrive in fertile, well-draining soil that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Depending on variety, blooms appear from late spring with showy flowers lasting into fall. Dozens of cultivars have been developed, with new ones coming to market each spring. Many identify as part of a collection with slight variations in color or size.

Hydrangea shrubs produce large, showy flowers in white, green, blue, purple, pink ,and red. The flowers often contrast and change color in autumn. And in many cases, the soil's pH determines where the blooms are pink or blue. The flower's form differs between species and may be dome-shaped (oakleaf, panicle), mophead (bigleaf, smooth), or lacecap (big leaf, mountain, climbing). Foliage and stems also vary in color and form and may have light green to nearly black leaves with red or black stems.

Below, we've rounded up 15 types of white hydrangeas with beautiful blooms to grace your garden.

Warning

Hydrangeas are toxic to cats, dogs and horses.

FAQ

  • What is the prettiest type of white hydrangea?

If you're looking for elegance, Annabelle is classic white hydrangea with large, white, mophead blooms. Glacier Bay is a showy contrast with nearly black stems, dark green leaves and crisp white flowers. The trailing habit of Fairytrail Bride® adorns any setting mounded or in hanging basket.

  • Do white hydrangeas need full sun?

Plenty of cultivars and types of hydrangea will grow in full sun, but most benefit from cooling off with a few hours of afternoon shade.

  • How do you keep a white hydrangeas white?

To keep your hydrangea white, choose a type that stays white until flowers fade like the smooth variety 'Annabelle'. Many types of white hydrangea, especially oakleaf and panicle cultivars, tend to take on shades of pink or green as they age. You won't be able to keep them white by changing soil acidity, which doesn't play a role in flower color with most white hydrangeas though there are a few exceptions like Veitchii.

  • Where is the best place to plant hydrangeas?

The best place to plant hydrangeas depends on type and size. The best growing conditions generally provide moist, well drained soil and morning sun with a few hours of afternoon shade.
