Bast shoes originated in Northern Europe. Impoverished people in the Baltic region, Russia, and Ukraine also wore bast shoes. These shoes were popular from prehistoric times until the early twentieth century.

Bast shoes are rarely seen nowadays. This ancient footwear is mainly found at festivals or as part of traditional dance. Bast shoes have now become a popular souvenir item for bringing back memories from this once-common sight.

Babouche – Morocco

The Babouche is a type of slipper that hails from Morocco. These slippers have a pointed-toe box and an extremely thin outsole with no heel. Babouches are made from soft leather or fabric and feature bright colors, decorative stitching, and unique patterns.

It is not clear when the first Babouches were created, but it’s likely that they had a variety of uses. Some believe these slippers were designed to keep women from running away or escaping their husbands. Others say this item was meant to prevent enslaved people from escaping freedom.

Cantabrian Albarcas – Cantabria, Northern Spain

Cantabrian Albarcas is a type of wooden clog traditionally worn in the Cantabria region of Northern Spain. These shoes were made from a locally-sourced single block of wood and crafted by hand.

Cantabrian Albarcas have a distinctive pair of three dowels on the outsole, giving them a unique design. They have a pointed-toe box design that keeps snow, mud, cow poop, and other debris from getting inside the shoe. Cantabrian Albarcas also feature some intricated carving on the upper.

Galesh, also known as Khussa or Charoq, is a type of slip-on shoe popular in Iran. These shoes are handwoven from fabric and often feature intricate embroidery with bright colors and patterns. Galeshes usually feature a pointed-toe box.

Galesh has been around for centuries and was once only worn by royalty and the upper class. Nowadays, Galesh is more commonly seen as a part of traditional Iranian clothing.

Jutti – India

Jutti is a type of flat shoe that originates from India. These shoes are made from leather and are often adorned with colorful embroidery, mirror work, and other embellishments. Jutti usually has a closed-toe box but can also be open-toed.

Juttis were traditionally made using real gold and silver threads and were once only worn by royalty and the upper class. Nowadays, Juttis are more commonly seen as a part of traditional Indian clothing.

Juttis are incredibly comfortable, perhaps the main reason their popularity has stayed consistent over the centuries.

Jika-Tabi/Tabi Boots – Japan

Jika-Tabi, also known as Tabi Boots, are boots that feature a split-toe design with a big toe box and a small heel. These boots divide the big toe from the other toes, giving the impression that the wearer is wearing socks with their shoes.

Jika-Tabi were originally made using leather but can now be made using various materials such as cotton, wool, and synthetic fibers. These boots have a reinforced rubber outsole. Jika-Tabi comes in different closures such as lace-up, zip-up, buttons, and velcro straps.

Jika-Tabi boots date back to the 15th century and were initially worn by samurai warriors. Nowadays, Jika-Tabi is most commonly seen worn by construction workers, farmers, and other manual laborers.

Kabkab Shoes – The Ottoman Empire

Kabkab shoes are a type of slipper typically worn by women in the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey). These shoes were once a practical means for ladies to protect their feet from muck and dirt, especially in bathhouses.

Kabkabs were decorated with gold, silver, or pewter embroidery. They also featured Nacre, also known as the mother of pearl, on the slits.

Kabkab shoes have flat soles made of wood or cork with leather straps that cross over the foot’s instep. These shoes have two wooden stilts on the outer sole that acts as a heel. The height of wooden slits can vary, with some being as high as two feet.

The shoe name “Kabkab” came from the sound these shoes make when walking. Kabkabs were seen during the 14th to 17th centuries. Nowadays, they are rarely seen and are only found in some parts of Turkey.

Khussa and Sindhi Mojari – India, Pakistan

Khussa and Sindhi Mojari is a slip-on shoe originating from India and Pakistan. These shoes are handcrafted using tanned leather and often feature intricate embroidery with bright colors and patterns. They are also decorated with cowry shells, mirrors, bells, ceramic beads, brass nails, and other embellishments.

Khussa and Sindhi Mojari are almost identical, with the only difference being the type of toe box. Khussas have a blunt toe tox while Sindhi Mojaris have a pointed toe box. Khussa and Sindhi Mojari resemble a lot to Juttis.

Khussa and Sindhi Mojari were traditionally made using real gold and silver threads and were once only worn by royalty and the upper class. Nowadays, they are common and worn in both casual and formal settings.

Klompen – Netherlands

Klompen is a traditional whole-foot wooden clog belonging to the Dutch people. These shoes have been around since the 13th century and were worn by both men and women. Klompen were worn for warmth and foot protection in the wet and cold Dutch weather.

Klompen was made from a single piece of wood and often featured colorful paint. These shoes have a slight curve to mimic the shape of the foot. They also have a slightly pointed toe box.

Nowadays, Klompen is worn chiefly as a novelty item and can be found in souvenir shops across the Netherlands. They are also worn with traditional dress costumes and for folk dancing.

Lotus Shoes – China

Lotus shoes are a type of foot-binding shoe originating from China. These shoes were made primarily for young girls and women with bound feet.

Lotus shoes were cone or sheath-shaped, designed to resemble a lotus bud. They were small enough, measuring between 5.25-5.5 inches in length and 1.5-2 inches in width.

Lotus shoes were made using silk and cotton fabrics and were often decorated with embroidery, sequins, or other embellishments. They also had intricate designs, such as dragons, phoenixes, flowers, and landscapes.

The practice of foot-binding started declining in the early 18th century and was completely outlawed in 1912. As a result, Lotus shoes are no longer made and are only found in museums, antique shops, or private collections.

Lapti – Russia

Lapti is a traditional Russian footwear made from bast. These shoes were fashioned with a wooden hook known as a Kodechik, giving the shoe a specific braided pattern.

Laptis were popular among the peasant and working-class communities as they were affordable, comfortable, and easy to make. However, these shoes were not durable and would fall apart within a couple of wears.

Laptis are rarely seen nowadays and are primarily found in folklore museums.

Mexican Pointy Boots – Mexico

Mexican Pointy boots, also called Botas Picudas or tribal boots, are pointed fashioned boots from Mexico. These boots are basically a funny version of traditional cowboy boots.

Mexican Pointy boots first appeared in 2009 and were mostly worn by tribal music subculture dancers and performers. These boots are characterized by their long, pointy-toe, which can be up to 5 feet (1.5 m) long. They also have a very low heel and are made using soft, high-quality flexible materials such as suede or leather.

Mexican Pointy boots often feature colorful embroidery and beadwork. They also have flashing LEDs, disco balls, and mirrors, making them very unique, eye-catching, and ostentatious.

Mexican Pointy boots reportedly originated in Monterrey, Mexico. They are now quite popular in dance clubs across Mexico and certain regions of the United States, particularly Dallas, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

Sami Reindeer Boots – Finland, Norway, Sweden

Sami Reindeer boots, also known as Nutukas, Finnesko, or simply Sámi boots, are traditional winter footwear of the Sami people. Sami Reindeer were designed to keep the feet warm in the cold Arctic climate. These boots were widely seen in Finland, Norway, and Sweden, all of which had a high reindeer population.

Sami Reindeer boots are made using soft, cured reindeer skin sourced usually from the leg or head of a reindeer. The boots were sewn in such a way that the fur was left on the outside of the boot rather than the inside. Sami Reindeer boots have a curved, upturned toe which helps in easy movement while walking on snow.

The boots are usually ankle-high or calf-length. The boot’s shaft is laced with a wide strap known as Vuoddagat. Vuoddagat is highly decorated with colorful beads and embroidery, making each boot unique.

On the inside, traditionally, Sami boots had grass (usually sennegrass) which kept the foot dry and warm. However, many Sami boots nowadays feature modern materials such as wool or synthetic fibers.

The outsole of the boots was made by assembling several layers of reindeer hide, with each piece sewn in a different direction. This unique construction provided the required traction on snowy surfaces. However, modern Sami boots feature rubber or synthetic soles for better traction and durability.

Sami Reindeer boots are still made today using traditional methods and modern materials. They are popular among Arctic explorers, hikers, and hunters as they protect against cold weather.

Sabot – France

Sabot is a full-foot clog that originated in France and was popular from the 16th to the 19th centuries. These shoes are made from a single piece of wood and sometimes feature heavy leather attached to the wooden sole.

Sabots were regarded as work shoes belonging to the peasant and working-class communities. They were worn mainly by farmers, factory workers, and miners as they were very affordable and easy to make.

Sabots are similar to Klompen in terms of shape and design. These shoes are highly decorated and are often brightly colored. They generally feature landscape painting and floral patterns, making them quite eye-catching.

Sabots were initially only worn in France but eventually spread to other parts of Europe, such as Belgium, Netherlands, and Italy.

Tsarouhi – Greece

Tsarouhi is a traditional Greek shoe worn by the Evzones, an elite infantry unit of the Greek Presidential Guard.

Tsarouhis are hand-sewn using small pieces of high-quality stiff leather. They have a long, upturned toe with a pom-pom attached to the tip. The pom-pom is usually red, white, or blue in color and was traditionally made from goat hair.

Tsarouhis were standard footwear for both men and women during the 18th and 19th centuries. However, they fell out of fashion in the early 20th century and were only worn by the Evzones.

Today, Tsarouhis are only worn on festivals, greek dances, and ceremonial occasions as a symbol of Greek culture and tradition.
