Did you know you can make pizza in a Dutch Oven?!

Dutch Oven Recipes are a must-have for any avid camper, and making pizza in a dutch oven is easy AND delicious! There’s simply nothing like hot fresh pizza while sitting around the campfire.

Last year I began making this dutch oven recipe and it turned out fantastic. Now, perhaps it was fantastic because everything always tastes better when you’re camping… but I would have to argue that it was just genuinely awesome and EASY to do!

Supplies

  • Dutch oven – We used a 10″ for this recipe but you can use a 12″ too, you’ll just have to adjust the amount of dough (more on that below)
  • Briquettes or campfire coals (Using briquettes will give you the most accurate temperature setting.)
  • Dutch oven liners or parchment paper (Optional, but highly recommended.)

Dutch Oven Pizza Ingredients

All you’ll need for this recipe is your favorite pizza dough (try this pizza dough recipe), sauce, and your choice of toppings.

We used 1 lb of dough in a 10″ Dutch oven, but I recommend using less than 1 lb, about 3/4 lb dough, for a 10″ oven. One pound of pizza dough is the perfect amount for a 12″ oven though. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your dough.

Preparing Your Dutch Oven

If you have a fire blanket, lay it out and cover with about an inch of dirt where your dutch oven will be. (I purchased a fire blanket several years ago because we like to backpack, and it is a great heat insulator for Dutch oven cooking, but it is not necessary to make the recipe.)

Stack up the appropriate amount of briquettes and light them to preheat. (See the Dutch Oven Temperature Guide below.)

Preparing the Pizza for the Dutch Oven

While your briquettes are preheating, prep your pizza on a dutch oven lineror parchment paper.

If you’re looking for convenience, use fresh pre-made dough and sauce (you can get some from Winco) for ease of packing and less prep time. However, you can also use your own pizza dough recipe and sauce if preferred.

Adding Toppings

You can use any or all toppings for the pizza – my family prefers pepperoni, so this is the first pizza that I made. What are your favorite pizza toppings?

Baking the Pizza

Once the briquettes are ready, remove the number needed for the top of the dutch oven with a shovel. Place the dutch oven on top of the remaining coals, and once it is settled, place the other briquettes on top of the oven. Adjust the number of coals as needed.

Allow your pizza to bake for 12 minutes, then check the pizza. Continue baking until the crust is golden brown at the center. (The dutch oven liners make the process of checking the pizza much easier because you can easily lift out the pizza as you check it.)

I like using this Lid Lifter sinceit easily grabs hold of the loop on the lid, but any lid-lifterwill work. Also, instead of using alid stand I gathered three rocks and set them beside the dutch oven to place the lid on while I checked the pizza.

Final Thoughts

When I’m not using my Dutch Oven, I use this tote bag to keep it out of the dirt and the bag also makes it easy to pack around. I keep my shovel & liners right inside and lay the lid lifter across the top to keep everything in one place.

Need a recommendation for a good Dutch oven? This Lodge Brand one is a favorite because of the size. There are some other high-quality (and affordable) dutch ovens on Amazon as well.

I’d love to see all of your pizza creations and hear if you like it as much as my family and I do! Leave a comment below with your favorite pizza toppings combinations!
